Philip Walsh, baptized in Dublin in , built several men-of-war for the French service. James Walsh was a captain in the French navy, and it was on board his ship that James II fled from Kinsale to France in , after the former King’s unsuccesful bid to reclaim the throne of England. This page tells some of that story. The French government was apprised of Prince Charles’s intentions, and though the French ministers were not disposed openly to sanction an enterprise which they were not at the time in a condition to support, they secretly favoured a design, which, whatever might be its result, would operate as a diversion in favour of France. Accordingly, Lord Clare, afterwards Marshal Thomond , then a lieutenant-general in the French service, was authorised to open a negotiation with two merchants of Irish extraction, named Rutledge and Walsh, who had made some money by trading to the West Indies. Lord Clare having introduced Prince Charles to Ruttledge and Walsh, explained the prince’s design, and proposed that they should lend him their ships. When informed that everything was in readiness for his departure, Charles went to Nantes, near the mouth of the Loire, in disguise, and having descended the Loire in a fishing boat on the 20th of June, O. The expedition sailed from Belleisle on the 5th of July with a fair wind, which continued favourable till the 8th, when a dead calm ensued. The engagement depicted in this painting took place on 9 July , and was described as follows: Captain Brett made four drawings illustrating the successive stages of the encounter, and this picture is based on that of the final phase in the Sandwich collection, Kingzett, op.

Represented in Artwork as Male or Female. Kannon worship remains non-denominational and widespread. Kannon personifies compassion and is one of the most widely worshipped divinities in Asia and Japan in both ancient and modern times. Veneration of Kannon in Japan began in the late 6th century, soon after Buddhism reached Japan by way of Korea and China.
Originally male in form, Kannon is now often portrayed as female in China, Japan, and other East Asian countries. Each of these nations dressed Kannon in different forms to suit their own temperaments and spiritual concepts. It was later shortened to Kannon. Kannon is a Bodhisattva Jp. The other is Seishi Bosatsu. In Japan, the three appear in a popular grouping known as the Amida Sanzon lit.
See photo in adjacent sidebar. Although depicted with masculine features in the earliest representations, Kannon later appears with attributes of both genders and eventually becomes a symbol of the divine feminine, the divine mother in both China and Japan. Popular feminine versions in modern Japan include Koyasu Kannon child giving , Jibo Kannon loving mother , Gyoran Kannon carrying fish basket , and others.
Kannon can appear in many different forms to save people.
Introduction Rather than provide a comprehensive history of the area or its discovery and exploration by the west, the main purpose of this section is to provide an overview that ties together my books and reading on these topics. It is as much for my own benefit as for any third party reader. It is a guide which is hopefully easier to navigate than a list of book titles. If you want to go deeper into the history of exporation in China and Tibet, then I highly recommend the complementary pages of Matthias Claus on “Reisen und Abenteuer in China und Tibet.
One page is a comprehensive annotated chronology of exploration of China and Tibet from – , and the other covers the same material, but is organized alphabetically, by person. These pages are in German.

Because his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, received public commissions, the family traversed the country throughout Calder’s childhood. Calder was encouraged to create, and from the age of eight he always had his own workshop wherever the family lived. For Christmas in , Calder presented his parents with two of his first sculptures, a tiny dog and duck cut from a brass sheet and bent into formation.
The duck is kinetic—it rocks back and forth when tapped. Even at age eleven, his facility in handling materials was apparent. Despite his talents, Calder did not originally set out to become an artist. He instead enrolled at the Stevens Institute of Technology after high school and graduated in with an engineering degree. Calder worked for several years after graduation at various jobs, including as a hydraulics and automotive engineer, timekeeper in a logging camp, and fireman in a ship’s boiler room.

It still has the original patina, dark brown and copper just like the factory produced them. So many of these radios have had the patina polished away, missing the reins or the saddle. And Lindsey ended this camp in her very own way, check out her video on her Facebook page June March 21, Lindsey Vonn in St. Moritz Lindsey Vonn made a short yet encouraging trip last week to St.
His grandfather came to England from Romania as a child at the turn of the 20th century, eventually emerging from extreme poverty to build a clothes shop business. He subsequently sent both his own children to Uppingham. Having toyed with the idea of becoming a professional golfer or even a rabbi, and spending his gap year doing various menial jobs, he eventually opted for law.
He attended law school in Chester, only to flunk his first mock exam. There, he specialised in traffic cases, more because of his office junior status than any grand design.
Pulsed microwave voice-to-skull (or other-sound-to-skull) transmission was discovered during World War II by radar technicians who found they could hear the buzz of the train of pulses being transmitted by radar equipment they were working on.
Add in the marines and the total wearing uniforms is still no more than 25, to 30, Perhaps with a similar number of civilian employees. In a prolonged major war this would expand greatly. But this is supported by trade. If the cost of trade protection the insurance premium approaches or even exceeds the value of trade itself, there will be a collapse of political support. Operations in a trade war will be primarily in space. If large scale planetary landings are required, cargo ships can be pressed into service as troop transports.
Light infantry is roughly equivalent to civil passengers: So for an invasion force, 3 ton equivalent cargo capacity per soldier, not counting the naval escort. Your Weather on metservice. How does it work? The WOW System was developed by the Met Office, with support from the Royal Meteorological Society and the Department for Education in the UK, to provide an online hub for UK weather observations which helps educate children about weather and encourages further growth in the UK’s amateur weather observing community. Despite its UK focus, the WOW System now has global coverage and has attracted visits from weather enthusiasts in more than countries.
This approach enables us to add other useful information, such as weather cams and traffic cams, in the same single view. We intend to grow the types of weather-related information that you can access from Your Weather pages, so let us know what you would like to see!

Each and every one of us will have at one time or another experienced the ebb and flow in our passion for trains and railways, whether it be an allegiance to steam or a penchant for more modern diesel and electric traction…in essence, the appeal of trains frequently comes and goes, but it never leaves us entirely. Terry’s fascination with trains began in the West Riding of Yorkshire during the s when the majority of small boys shared a passion for train spotting.
It started off as a relatively simple hobby at first, little morethan jotting down a few engine numbers at his local station at Saltaire near Shipley until it dawned on him that spotting the same old engines time and time again was a fruitless exercise and a wider search began in earnest. His parents were badgered for permission to travel further afield, but wisely no mention was made of the hairy escapades his trips involved, often pedalling mile upon mile on push bikes to faraway places and climbing over perimeter walls to gain access to engine sheds.
Alas, by the mid s our search for engine numbers took an ominous downturn and our spotting trips were returning fewer rewards than previous times, not least because collecting engine numbers was a speculative pursuit where success was measured by the sum total of ‘cops’ collected. Now you don’t have to be a mathematician to calculate the odds of adding more numbers to your collection when the rank and file of BR steam was being culled at an alarming rate.
This is where things began to get serious, for having exhausted the ‘cop’ rate in our local area, the only way of filling the gaps in our Ian Allan ABCs was by travelling further afield, and so marathon trips were planned to distant BR Regions to track down those stubborn ‘bs’ of engines we needed before they too ended up on the scrap heap. However, in the world of railway photography the complete opposite often turns out to be the case.
